  • Born July 1916 in Ashland, PA

  • Taught school until she retired

  • Met Eleanor Roosevelt—twice

  • Proudly received 100th birthday letter from President Obama (pictured)

  • At 81, eloped from retirement home to marry 76-year-old second husband

  • Two children (from earlier marriage)

"When I started to vote, you had to be 21. Now it's only 18. I think it was Roosevelt, one of his times. He was four times, you know. I turned 21 in 1937, so I could vote in the next one. I got a job at Fairview High School in West Virginia, and that's where I voted."
