  • Born in Turkey, where her Swiss parents rescued 8,000 Armenian orphans

  • Grew up in Beirut, where her parents worked with Armenian refugee children

  • Came to U.S. as Goucher College exchange student

  • Married American medical student in Beirut, returning to U.S. at start of World War II

  • Artist, teacher, prize-winning succulent grower

  • Four daughters, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren
